OHSAS 18001 is the internationally recognized standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Although it is not yet an “ISO” standard, and is technically a “Specification”, it is being used by multinational corporations in various industries to incorporate management systems into their existing safety and health programs.
OHSAS 18001 requires a systematic approach to accidents, incidences, near misses and industrial hygiene. It includes setting goals, tracking programs, communicating these to the employees, involving senior management and performing internal audits to concur that the occupational health and safety management system is working as planned.
DEKRA takes OHSAS 18001 and, where appropriate, incorporates it into other management systems such as the environmental management system (e.g. ISO 14001) or a quality management system (e.g. ISO 9001, AS 9100, TL9001, etc.). DEKRA will perform integrated audits with these other management systems to lessen the operational disruption as well as saving costs. Although occupational health and safety programs are normally considered overhead requirements, DEKRA audits to OHSAS 18001 so that it, as a management system, provides business value as well as meeting the laws and regulations.
In the United States, there is another occupational health and safety management system standard that is sometimes requested: ASNSI/AIHA Z10. Since there are some minor differences between it and OHSAS 18001, DEKRA is qualified to certify companies to this strictly US standard, if requested. Our program manager is prepared to discuss how we can customize an occupational health and safety management system audit program to meet your business and health and safety needs.
